Do Probiotics "Stick Around?"

Friendly bacteria taken in a supplement like Flora Source® Multi-Probiotic® and other probiotic supplements grow in the small and large intestines for a certain length of time. However, they do not permanently colonize there. Many scientists theorize that our immune system up to about the age of two allows us to adopt additional friendly bacteria strains. A mature immune system does not permanently adopt new friendly bacteria.

If your friendly bacteria levels have been damaged from illness, medications, stress, diet or other causes and your digestive system is not maintaining a consistent level of good bacteria, a daily supplement can help. And, because probiotic strains do not colonize in the digesitve tract, it's important to keep taking a daily supplement for as long as it is beneficial.
